slow me up: cypress knees

I love the sight of these knobby old swamp cypress knees lined up at the water’s edge. They look like little gnomic creatures, surveying the horizon, or getting ready to wade in. Cypress knees are mysterious; why do the trees have them? Who will cradle on one, and what stories will they hear?

I recently heard from a longtime instructor at the NYBG that cypress knees are an ingenious method developed by the cypress roots to process gasses (I suppose breathe?)- particularly the cypresses that grow entirely in standing water. Nifty, right?
