Free Hugs, Abbracci Gratis

Polly Chatfield, who came to a Slow Love reading in Rockport, Maine, kindly sent me this video of what in my day was called "a happening", this one in Italy. The song, Hallelujah, gets a little too orchestrated for my taste. My son Theo and I like the Jeff Buckley version better--to say nothing of the original, by the musician god who wrote it, Leonard Cohen. (And while we're on it, here's some funny information about the song.) As we were listening to Buckley's version, we looked up and saw an enormous rainbow spanning the sky across the back of the house. Theo took these pictures and compiled the collage.

Theo tells me that only alternative middle school girls go around with Free Hug signs, and that it is annoying. Tough. Regalo Abbracci...Count me in.

Beautiful collage, just beautiful. And, thank you for introducing me to Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah - it's my partner's favourite song and it is his birthday in the morning so this video will be awaiting him in his inbox. I don't comment often but I read your blog all the time. Thank you.

Dominique (and Theo),

Thank you for the beautiful collage.

I find the John Cale version to also be quite beautiful.

The beauty of humanity. It can break your heart.

Leonard Cohen is most certainly a "musician god". I've seen him three times, the last time just this past autumn, and I am always completely in awe. His lyrics are the articulation of the soul.

Dominique, it is so interesting that you posted this today, because early last evening as I went to pick up my son at the ferry dock, I watch the boat glide under the same rainbow. It was just magical. Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah is one of his favorites. Now I’ll have to ask him to play it later. Thanks!

I have seen a few of these and then can't get the song out of my head for the whole day.

Dominique, Your visuals are always so beautiful! I prefer Jeff Buckley's version as well, but haven't heard a version I'd turn off yet.
Hugs to you!

Here's a hug going your way :-)

Interesting to see people's reaction to a free hug ... then again, I'm pretty sure I would keep walking too, if someone approached me offering a free hug ... says a lot about our sociey, doesn't it? sad, sad, sad.

I prefer kd lang's version. She's one of the few singers that give me goosebumps, and her version of Hallelujah is IMO the best.

Thanks to you and Theo - lovely start to the week.

Rainbows SUCK!!

Just kidding of course!! Nice photo assembly, Theo.

For all of the Leonard Cohen fans check out K.D. Lang's 'Hymms of the 49th Parallel'

In a word...

AWESOME.

I just love "coincidences" ...

after clicking on the link to the video, and listening for a while, I went to kd ang's version... (that voice!) which prompted me to go searching for a recent cd of hers ... so I ordered Hymns along with another copy of Slow Love (friend's birthday coming up)... and so it goes

coincidences, right?

I love this Regalo Abbracci link almost as much as I love this song by Leonard Cohen. I am partial to the K.D. Lang version (Hymns of the 49th Parallel), but no matter who sings the lyrics the song fills my heart with joy.

I'm sitting here at work noticing that going without power in my Maryland home since the storm on Sunday is slowing me down... nicely... into the rhythms of the day. Last evening, my partner, Gregory, and I sat quietly, looking out from our house in the trees, as the sun went down. This morning we sat quietly as the sun came up. I wonder if I would have enjoyed this so much if I hadn't been reading your book and blog, Dominique. Thank you.

thanks for sharing this. from the moment i read your 'take joy' quote at the beginning of your book (love fra g)i felt like we were kindred spirits. and i'm so glad that you didn't part w/ may sarton's 'solitude' (another favorite of mine). but it's when you mentioned jeff buckley's hallelujah (early link on my fb page) that i felt compelled to comment. love your writing..thanks for the inspiration (and yes, there really isn't a graceful way to get in/out of a kayak!)

My partner and I really enjoyed reading this blog post, I was just itching to know do you trade featured posts? I am always trying to find someone to make trades with and merely thought I would ask.
