STOP OCEAN ABUSE!

My July Personal Nature column for the Environmental Defense Fund has been posted. It is about what I'm calling Ocean Abuse--much on my mind as I trudge up and down the beaches here collecting all the trash people carelessly leave behind. Please read it by clicking here. Remember Smokey the Bear's campaign to Stop Forest Fires? We need a campaign to Stop Trashing Our Oceans, a campaign that sinks into the national consciousness because it is seen everywhere, for years and years...Nemo? Little Mermaid? Any other ideas?

The Crab with a conscience. He can holler at people to pick up their stuff and not make his home a mess!

Thank goodness California is looking to ban plastic bags for one. Next we have to block every entry to the ocean-done here by grates over street sewer connection by the curb. I have been reading a lot about the trash mountain in the ocean somewhere that supposedly is as big as the state of Texas filled with plastic bags and all sorts of other crap we throw away. It makes me sick to think of all the man made disasters that contribute to this mass. Thanks for the article. I commented to the person who blames Obama. I am so sick of this. He was not in office when we deregulated the oil companies and gave over all our power to lobbyists who continue to ruin our country in my opinion. Just my two cents.

Oh my... I just couldn't agree with you more. After winter storms here in Newburyport, I can pick up 50 plastic bottles within 200 yards. I am heading over to the Environmental Defense Fund to read your column right now.

The litter is awful this year so far. Why can't there be fines posted? Perhaps a beach brigade of minimally paid--or volunteer--teenagers to clean daily?
