"THIS IS GOING GREEN '1949 STYLE', BITCH. BLEEDAT."

That is a quote from Ice Cube in his surprisingly earnest video about the Eames House in LA. My friend Zoe, always on top of the latest from rapland, sent it to me. Funny, Ray and Charles Eames were on my mind recently. I was recalling their 1977 video called The Powers of Ten, which I often find very comforting when I'm feeling overwhelmed by a problem. For instance, in the case of climate disruption: it is hard not to feel like we are stuck, we've gone nowhere as the situation worsens. But when I pull out in powers of ten, I am astonished at how much has been done--how much more we know, how much we are changing. Of course, the same holds for the problem....it worsens, and faster.

Take a look at both videos. Spacey. "We reach the edge of present understanding." One thing I appreciate about the Eames' film is the love of science and discovery, and the comfort with shifting perspective and pushing boundaries. What I love about Ice Cube's film is his evident affection for the architectural gem that is the Eames' house, and the way he puts it into the context of newer, splashier LA lifestyles. Great to watch a new generation discover the radical chic of the American mid-century. Talk about new perspectives. Pulling far into outer space, the Eames' note: "This emptiness is normal. The richness of our own neighborhood is an exception."
