Or, rather, what I wouldn't give to live in one of these buildings, historic post offices up for sale all over the country...And if you don't know the story by Eudora Welty, here's a chance to listen to it--a snowy day treat from my P.O to yours.

I haven't had a chance to read the article, but just based on the photographs, I want to live in the P.O. in Santa Monica! I'm enjoying your posts and the activity on your blog.
Any of those buildings would make a great American Apparel factory outlet!
My introduction to Eudora Welty was in the 70s when a friend played her recording of "Why I live at the P.O." The same friend also introduced me to Willa Cather and both she and Welty have become abiding favorites.
I'm sorry, nothing to do with the buildings, but your title set me off on a long reminiscence as I prepare for the cocktail party we're giving tonight.
Thank you.. beautiful sentiment. Our 1930's PO in Ukiah CA was closed by USPS & sold in 2012. It sits empty, and have no idea what the plan is for use. It's sad.
It's actually a great and helpful piece of info. I'm happy
that you just shared this helpful info with us. Please stay us up to date like this.
Thank you for sharing.

I get it, Dominique. I always wanted to live in a Carnegie library.
After the last 2 days, anywhere that has palm trees would be great. Palo Alto looks pretty nice too!
Oh, "Why I live at the P.O." contains one of my favorite Welty lines....in which the narrator wails over the difficulties involved in "trying to stretch one chicken over six people".
try this sometime, yourself....it's HARD.
I should add that my OTHER favorite, comic Welty line is a remark made by someone concerning a sweet-but-simple young woman in a small town. Apparently, she was sweet, but "she could sit on the porch and spend all day trying to figure out how the tail of the 'C' on the coca-cola sign got through the 'l' at the end".
(I'm paraphrasing, obviously, and I can't for the life of me remember, just now, what the coca-cola logo actually looks like)....still?....it's funny.

Having read about the rich and famous being hacked, would anyone mind if I took the winnings and bought all of these buildings for the public good? Mia we may have to time share Palo Alto but based on our posts I am sure we can work something out. Santa Monica comes with avowed Socialists. Berkeley will soon be covered with graffitti. Can't we find something in FL or AZ for the winter months too? Oh and a lighthouse on Martha's Vineyard -- surely the gov needs to sell one of those too.
Love this, the light house idea is great too!
