CLINGING TO A TREE

Does it get any more beautiful than this? What a brilliant surprise on such a grey day in the woods.

I don't know what makes me happier, this photograph -- and you have to tell us what kind of fungus (?) this is, once you find out --or the fact that you were out in the woods today.

I wish I knew how to begin to identify this tree fungus...I plan to watch it over the next couple of months to see if it is like seaweed, with seasonal changes in color. That would be amazing, no? And yes! So glad to be walking in a place that has a different kind of wildness than New York's.

ID is "turkey tail fungus"....comes in different forms, and apparently is used as a possible cancer treatment in Asia. http://www.fcps.edu/islandcreekes/ecology/turkey_tail.htm
